Model Minority Cooking Project
“Go to Harvard and become a doctor” is what I heard every day growing up.
A middle school report card for a model minority is interpreted as follows:
A: Average
B: Below average
C: Can’t eat dinner
D: Don’t come home
F: Find a new family
Minorities know they have to work 10 times harder to succeed. This is exhausting. Believe me, I feel it still.
But there is a silver lining. The tenfold efforts made by nameless minority cooks have elevated everyday dishes to new heights.
This blog is a record of my research in ways to cook some of my favorite dishes, then creating an elevated version of the all-American dish. Cooking beyond the whiteness of Classic American dishes.
As we consume the dishes, I know we also consume the stories that make the food unique. The story is an integral part of each creation.
As with anything I do as a model minority, the goal is set high. I am aiming to create a Netflix series on model minority cooking. These are stories of us tackling racism one meal at a time.
